Recently a client requested some urgent support around their SharePoint environment which required one of the SharePoint services to be started. When I asked for the service account password, the client didn't have it.

So what to do next? Well if you are fortunate enough that the same service account is being used for one of the application pools in IIS, then here is a quick method.

  1. Check the IIS Application Pools to see if any of the Application pools is running under the specific service account, lucky for me it was
  2. Run Powershell as Administrator
  3. run the following (replace <NAME OF APP POOL> with the name of the app pool
    cmd.exe /c $env:windir\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list apppool "<NAME OF APP POOL>" /text:ProcessModel.Password
